SUNA SPOTLIGHT: Siobhan Brown

**********

Siobhan Brown feels being a urology nurse was her fate.

And faith played a role, too.

“Urologic nursing has been a real enjoyment,” says Siobhan. “It came to me at a time where I truly believe I was touched by God. In 1998, my grandfather had passed away from prostate cancer and here I am now. I feel this job was placed in my hands for a reason; it chose me. It has been a great job and for the first time in my life, I now laugh more while working, I make others laugh and I am able to help others though the power of laughter.”

Siobhan works for a private urologist at St Joseph Mercy-Oakland, David L. Harold M.D., and has been employed there for almost six years.

“I have been his only office nurse on staff,” Siobhan boasts. “The busier the day, the better!”

Dr. Harold is also the one ultimately responsible for Siobhan becoming a SUNA member.

As I showed interest in Urology working for Dr. Harold, he encouraged me to pursue SUNA and continue on in urological education for certification and has supported me since,” she says. “As I have been to almost all local functions, SUNA has really helped me become more motivated to go further. Our local chapter has really influenced me to get my certification and have been very uplifting.”

Siobhan became board certified last October by passing the urologic nursing certification examination administered by the Certification Board for Urologic Nurses and Associates.

The medical field has been all Siobhan has known since her teen years. She worked in ear, nose, and throat for 3 ˝ years as her first job, then went to a family practice with six doctors for 18 months and as a second job at that time also worked for an urgent care facility nights and weekends – all as a medical assistant.

In 2002, she found MedMatch and was offered a job though Dr. Harold.

Siobhan currently lives in
Waterford, Mich., with her wonderful boyfriend and his seven-year-old daughter. Her nickname is “Chevy” because her favorite car to work on is a Chevy and, as she puts it, “I will always stand by Chevy, even in NASCAR, an American revolution!”

She also is planning for the future in a good many ways.

“I grew up in a very broken home and chose to go further in life and not become my own broken world,” says Siobhan. “God has bigger plans for me. I plan on going back to college in a few years, but right now, I am truly focused on my career and getting out of debt!”
