SUNA Spotlight: Maureen Cooney

**********

You can never accuse Maureen Cooney, RN, of not having a sense of humor.

After all, she came to urology from the operating rooms in Cincinnati where she “did lots of exciting stuff – trauma, kidney and heart transplants.”

Leaving her home state of Ohio, Maureen then worked in the OR at Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Mich., and most recently in the Procedure Suites in the Rose Cancer Center at Beaumont, Royal Oak, Mich.

But this past April, Maureen, at the urging of a friend, moved over to the Department of Urology Research at Royal Oak’s campus and is now a Research Nurse Clinician/Study Coordinator.

“It seems to be a good fit,” said Maureen. “It’s definitely different from any type of nursing I have done in the past.  I really like getting to know each patient and am able to spend more time with them in this setting.”

Maureen graduated from University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She then worked in the OR before crossing over to a desk job.

That’s when SUNA came calling, quite literally.

“I joined SUNA because Shelly (Lajiness, NP) said I had to,” laughed Maureen. “No really, I have an awful lot to learn and think SUNA will be a great resource.”

Maureen lives in Berkley with husband and two children. Her son and a daughter keep Maureen and Patrick pretty busy with their sports and extracurricular activities.

WELCOME, MAUREEN!
