SUNA Spotlight: Martin Carey, BA, CCRP
************************************************
Martin Carey is new to
urology and new to SUNA, but facing those two challenges is something he
welcomes with open arms.
Currently working in the
Urology Research Department at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., Martin
assists with the coordination of the Urology Research outcomes databases.
But he’s far from a newbie
when it comes to the medical field.
Martin was previously
employed as a hemodialysis technician at Beaumont while attending St. Mary’s
College of Ave Maria University (Orchard Lake, Mich.), where he graduated in
2002 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in chemistry.
“I enjoyed the direct
interaction with the patients and found it to be extremely rewarding,” Martin
says. “Shortly after I graduated, I transferred to the Cardiology Department at
Beaumont, where I coordinated Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials. I wanted
exposure to Phase 1 clinical trials, so in 2004, I accepted a position at the
Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University.”
Once he came back to
Beaumont this past summer, he heard about SUNA through department co-workers
and quickly joined. Combine that with the intense research activity at Beaumont
and Martin believes he has found a perfect fit.
“I joined SUNA in October of
this year to expand my knowledge of urology and to grow professionally,” says
Martin. “I selected urology due to the essential and innovative research being
conducted at Beaumont.”
Martin currently lives in
Clawson, Mich., with his wife, Melissa, and their four-year-old Brittany
spaniel, Cooper. Martin and Melissa, both originally from Royal Oak, celebrated
their fifth wedding anniversary this past May.
